Clean Album (Andrew E.)

Monday, November 19th, 2007

Andrew E, the most durable Pinoy rapper of all time, has a new record label. It is Fordy Music. It comes from his middle name Ford, which became a byword after he recorded Tone Loc’s Funky Cold Medina as Andrew Ford Medina and which later became the title of one of his biggest box-office hits. Some years later it became the name of Andrew’s little boy, Fordy, who seems to have inherited whatever is best about Andrew’s features.

He is Andrew’s spitting image but without the panget.

For an idea of what five-year-old Fordy looks like, check out the cover of Andrew E’s latest album, which he entitled Clean. What is clean about an Andrew E album? For this one I would say the adorable Fordy playing with his rubber duckie while in the bubble bath on the cover. He is clean like the cover of the album and unlike his dad, who has remained at his bastos best with his music and who is once more selling a lot of CDs.

It is the truth. Andrew E is still a big seller nearly 20 years after he was a young DJ discovered by Ramon "RJ" Jacinto at Euphoria singing Humanap Ka ng Panget. Nobody thought Andrew could be a star in music, films and television but he did all that and more including a clothing line called DonGalo. Seriously though, Andrew has matured into a sort of guru to young rappers. He teaches them the ropes of the music business and provides them with much needed exposure through shows and recordings.

Times have changed though and Pinoy rap is not as hot as before, but you can still count on Andrew to make the presence of this music felt. I recall him doing the same with Banyo Queen about six or seven years ago. Rap was also down but along came Andrew with the outrageous song and created another hit. Rap was said to be down again these days. But then Viva Records released Andrew E’s Mali Vodka and what do you know, it is a hit.

Clean by Andrew E is as irreverent as ever. As always, his rap lyrics are an acquired taste. You can think of these as either brilliant or simply lewd. It is all a matter of taste. The beat of his music though is eternally infectious and appeals to listeners of all ages. It is still hard to resist dancing when Andrew E is on the floor. Fordy dances to it and so do Lolos and Lolas during Andrew’s campaign sorties for various election candidates all over the country.

Clean includes the title cut plus Lahian Mo Ako featuring Katya Santos, Na-Try Mo Na Ba Ako, Mali Vodka, Ikaw (Humanap Ka ng Panget Part 2), Girl featuring KortaPluma, Cowboy – Cowgirl, We Love Boracay, Aussie Aussie (O, Sige!), I-Papa-Clone Kita, Hijo featuring Yawzi and Khen Magat and Here We Go 4 featuring an assembly of some of the best rappers under Andrew’s DonGalo Wreckords.
